Profile / Background

I TRY TO
MAKE SENSE OF
UNCERTAINTY.

I’m drawn to questions that don’t have neat answers. Sometimes the best way to approach them is through probability, simulation and data; other times it is through history, politics and philosophy.

01 / Background

I’m Nathan Foale, a quantitatively minded generalist based in Melbourne. My interests sit somewhere between mathematics, economics, technology, markets and the way people make decisions.

Away from work and study, I’m particularly interested in poker — both as a game and for the strategy, probability and decision-making under uncertainty behind it. I’m also into football, padel, the gym and chess, and have a habit of going down rabbit holes on whatever has caught my attention. I spend a lot of time reading and thinking about investing, emerging technology, economics and politics, and enjoy using code and data to explore questions in those areas.

Curiosity is probably the common thread. I like understanding why things work, testing ideas for myself, and occasionally turning those ideas into projects or writing.
